How to Save Money on Public Transport While Solo Travelling?

At the airport, keep your eyes peeled for the free shuttle service. Get your adventure on with those hop-on, hop-off bikes, and make sure to group all the must-see spots.

If you are committed to saving money, use public transport. We all have this tendency to go for the easiest way to travel and that would be a taxi. However, if you do some homework you can save a lot of money by taking public transport. These days the airports either have metro or bus services to take you to the centre of the city. You can also get busses from the airport which can take you to another city. I have compiled some random tips which will tell you how to save money on public transport while solo travelling.

  • If you're adventuring solo and plotting to saunter to another city, the train is the way to go! For instance, Bangkok to Phuket is a dreamy overnight ride. You'll save a few coins on hotel bookings, plus trains won't dent your travel budget like planes. Plus, train trips are like a magic carpet ride, whisking you away to experience authentic local culture.
  • Listen up, penny pinchers! Want to save some serious cash? Then get your pre-booking game on point! Especially if you're hitting the rails in India, where train tickets now come with "Dynamic Pricing." That's right, the closer you are to the travel date, the steeper the price. And hey, Londoners, you're not off the hook either - dynamic pricing is also in full swing on your buses. So, time to channel your inner early bird and save some moolah!
  • Hey there, fellow explorers! Feast your eyes on the magical airport shuttle, whisking you away to the promised land of bus and train stations, all for free! Even the most epic delays at Delhi airport can't stop this ride of awesomeness. All you gotta do is flash your flight ticket, and boom! The gateway to your next escapade is unlocked.
  • Jetting off to Bangkok? Keep your wallet happy with a free shuttle service from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Don Mueng Airport! Look out for a white bus with plenty of space for your luggage. No need to stress over tickets, it's a first-come, first-served basis. The cherry on top? These shuttles run every half hour, from 5:00 AM to midnight.

Day Pass and Buddy Up

Know the distance (km) where you want to go. Getting ripped by taxi guys can ruin the solo travelling experience. If you know the distance you can calculate how much a typical ride would cost you. You can Google this easily. Just type the name of the location and put `distance’ in the end.

Buy a `day pass’. Most of the countries will have this option. The Barcelona City Tour, the Original London Sightseeing Tour, and the Washington DC Hop-on Hop-Off tours are legendary.

Buddy up! You can save a lot of money on transportation. Meet solo travellers and if you are going in one direction, why not share the ride? This way you can even hire a taxi and not feel guilty. Pooling especially helps when you are going back to the airport. I have saved so much money like this.

Pack light, you will start by saving money on the flight.

  • These days airlines are charging big money on checked-in luggage. Specifically the budget airlines like Air Asia or Ryanair.
  • Let’s assume your hotel is near the bus stop you just arrived at. It would be super easy to just walk down with a piece of light luggage.
  • Even at the airports, with heavy luggage walking to the metro or bus stop could be cumbersome. These two options are usually a bit far off.
  • On some minivan tours, you have to pay more for your luggage. With one luggage you save money over here too.
